We have had a week of laughter starting last Friday when I suggested that Bert use these great new crutches I came across.  I had a little help from my rehab director friend who also doubles as a comedian, maybe that's why these crutches became the start of something funny...because someone funny loaned them to me:)  I don't know, but I was excited to have Bert try them out.  They are those sleek kind that have that arm hole and then the handles, they had cool reflectors and were a swagg black, very GQ for crutches.  My friend showed me how to use them and we decided since they were black that they would go with anything, making them almost invisible.  Bert usually uses me or the kids as his crutch and when I nag him he takes a walking stick which I was feeling like was not the best ambulatory device.  I was excited for the crutches and as soon as I got home Friday I brought them right into his office for him to try out.  Sophia was there and she agreed with me that they were great and she thought no one would even notice them...so sleek and black.  Bert used some words to describe the crutches that I can't blog.  Whatever, I said just try them, maybe you will be so mobile and comfortable you will want to use them.  He put his arms in and started to walk with them, he looked pretty balanced and comfortable, Sophia and I thought they would work pretty good.  Then Alex came in and asked what we were doing, I said dad is trying out these great new crutches aren't they cool you can't even see them right?  Alex rolled his eyes and said "are you guys blind?"  "You can totally see those things!" This put Bert and the kids into hysterics, not funny I said!  I am always out numbered and the hysteria continued till I had to laugh too.  Laughter is really the best medicine for anything, it makes you feel so good.  A sense of humor may be one of the most important things in life.  If you can keep a sense of humor about life, everything will really be OK.

That is what attracted me to Bert in the first place, he is funny and he makes me laugh everyday...I am a little high strung, a worrier and a bit too serious at times.  Bert has mellowed me out over the years and I have a lot more fun in life because of his humor.  My kids have inherited his easy going personality and his sense of humor too.  We spent the next few days making fun of the new crutches and laughing about how invisible they are, I still think they are great and am hoping he warms up to them.  The laughter in our house continued with the 80's radio station.  Bert had the 80's radio station on in the car and was entertaining Sophia and himself singing along to all the songs, it became a family affair when Prince and When Doves Cry came on, Bert and I could both belt out the words and the kids didn't know what to think.  From Prince to Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go Go we knew all the words and this brought lots of laughter.  Bert was making us laugh with his seat dancing...he said ALS couldn't take away his ability to dance while sitting in the car.  Music and laughter are a powerful combination.  Laughter can make you forget, it can make the seriousness of life become lighter and more bearable.

We thought there was nothing funny about ALS...it certainly doesn't have a sense of humor.  We thought all that ALS brought was tears and sadness.  We thought ALS was only serious, not lighthearted, a thief.  But, turns out ALS isn't any of that, it's a stupid screw up with motor neurons, it doesn't have any power really.  It doesn't take the humor out of the person, it can't stop they bubbly feeling of laughter, it can't take emotions like joy and love.

We laugh a lot, things are funny and you just need to laugh.  We laugh at ourselves, everyone is always laughing at me which is not fair, but it's all good, because I once read that laughing for 15 seconds adds 2 days to your life span so screw you ALS with the laughter in this house we all might live forever.

So, remember to LAUGH!
